Massage Therapy Program CoursesIntroduction to Massage School, 5 hours This course introduces student to the policies and procedures of the Institute and provides a preview of what to expect in Massage school. Developing the Healer Within, 50 hours We journey inward in this class. The outcome of this journey is the ability to understand and hold a safe container for oneself and one’s clients. Anatomy & Physiology, 115 hours Students learn anatomy and physiology of the human body, including the cell, tissue, and systems. Pathology, 25 hours We explore basic pathology as it relates to the provision and contraindication of massage therapy. Structural Kinesiology, 120 hours Origins, insertions and actions of relevant muscles are taught. We present clinical and postural information for each muscle and muscle groups presented. Approximately 90-100 muscles are taught, incorporating muscles from the extremities, the buttock, abdomen, back, neck, head and chest. Palpation of muscles plays a significant role in the course. Swedish Massage, 103 hours Basic Swedish Massage techniques are taught, including use of proper body mechanics and the medical and historical perspectives of the modality. Quality of touch and the mind-body connection are explored. Later, we develop advanced techniques and the use of creativity and intuition. Neuromuscular Therapy, 175 hours Neuromuscular therapy is a modality that addresses pain, postural imbalances, biomechanical dysfunction, trigger points, and referred pain. In this comprehensive study of neuromuscular therapy, we learn the physiological laws and theories that provide the foundation for treatment. We learn protocols for muscles throughout the entire body including back, abdomen, chest, neck, buttocks, lower extremity and upper extremity. While the study of neuromuscular is often very clinical in nature, the practice of this modality has deep implications in the mind/body of the client. Therefore, we also explore the ways in which trauma is stored in the body and the connections between the physical body and emotional and mental patterns. Deep Tissue Massage, 25 hours Deep Tissue techniques are taught in a manner that stresses integration with Swedish Massage and Neuromuscular Therapy. Physical Assessment, 25 hours We teach various assessment tools including palpation, range of motion restrictions, and posture. Students practice methods of measurement and assessment and discover relationships to muscle length. Introduction to Asian Modalities, 30 hours Students learn the basics of Traditional Chinese Medical Theory and have experiential learning in Asian bodywork techniques. Other Modalities, 50 hours This course consists of a series of classes introducing various modalities taught by specialists in each. Examples include spa services, Polarity Therapy, and sports massage. In addition to lecture and demonstration, there is experiential exploration of the techniques. Business and Ethics, 20 hours Tools for business development, marketing, operation of a clinical practice are taught. We gain understanding of regulations, taxes, and professional associations. We explore ethical issues in bodywork. Blood Borne Pathogens, 2 hours Various blood borne pathogens and universal precaution procedures are taught. CPR, 5 hours Red Cross or equivalent certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation is provided. Community Service Project, 25 hours Students develop and implement a community service or volunteer service project, keep a journal of experiences, and write a paper detailing the project. Clinic, 50 hours Students coordinate and provide massage at a community massage clinic located on the Institute premises and supervised by a massage therapist. |
